ARCHAEOLOGICAL VALUES STOLEN FROM THE GALLIPOLI PENINSULA

On April 25th, 1915, at the end of the second day following the Allied landings at Gallipoli, French troops landed in the vicinity of the ancient city of Elaious, now known as Eskihisarlık. The ruins of the ancient city of Elaious, which emerged under the soil that had been lifted from the ground after the Turkish artillery shelling at Kerevizdere, just north of this location, were discovered by troops of the French Eastern Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. These troops then started excavation works in July 1915 with the arrival of various professional excavation teams to the peninsula. During these excavations, the Necropolis area of the city was reached and many artefacts were found. Most of the artefacts found during the excavations, which continued until mid-December 1915, were added to the collection of the Louvre Museum in France
