DARDANEL = HOW DID I WIN THE TITLE OF ÇANAKKALE

The first captain of the Turkish national football team was Fenerbahce’s Hasan Kamil Sporel

This match and my game left a deep impression everywhere. The sports reporters of the daily newspapers applauded me in all their articles. Even the magazine (The Sport) published in Chicago used the title Dardanel when talking about me.

At that time, the general war was going on with utter disastrous results. The Allied navies were badly pressurising Çanakkale. In those days, the British were forced to abandon Gallipoli without achieving any success, and this success of the Turks was met with astonishment by the American and world public opinion. Everyone was reading about the Çanakkale victories in the newspapers and admiring the heroism and heroism of the Turks against the great powers of Europe

Just at this time, when this victory of mine was recorded, they attributed this great title to me. Although this title, which is attributed to the victor in a football match, is a bit exaggerated. But this honour, which our heroic army and our heroic nation had secured in the presence of the whole world, was a great honour for me as well. The fact that I was represented in this way gave me an indescribable pride and honour. Thinking that the blood flowing in my veins was the blood of this heroic nation, I reserved a share of honour for myself because of my belonging to this victorious nation and I was pleased on behalf of the country to be called (Dardanel=Çanakkale). After this match, I became the apple of the club’s eye. After that, I participated in many games and proved on many occasions that this title was not a useless title.
